New road tax charges posted online

Confirmation of the road tax charges for motor vehicles for 2024 is now available on the website of the Independent authority for Public Income (AADE). They are stated to be largely unchanged from the current year.

MyCAR logo

Motorists should go to myCAR platform on the website (aade.gr/mycar) and hit the blue button under the myCAR logo to enter the application. (An English version is under construction but not yet available for use). They will then get a prompt to enter their TAXISnet codes.

Once into the application they should hit the dark blue button on the left twice (“road tax” > “notification of road tax”) to display a page which should have their AFM, the number plate of the car they have registered with the tax authorities, and by default the year 2024 (previous years can also be selected). Hitting the blue button at the bottom will display the “notification of road tax” with details of the car, the amount to be paid, and an RF code for payment through online banking. This should be printed out and kept in the car with the receipt for payment of the road tax.

The deadline for payments is 31st December 2023, after which motorists may be subject to a fine. The road tax can be paid in three different ways:
– by visiting an ATM, scanning the QR code on the notification and then following the instructions on the screen.
– paying via online banking using the 23 digit RF code given on the notification
– by visiting a bank branch or ELTA and paying manually, showing the notification.

Confirmation of payment

Once the road tax has been paid, a confirmation can be downloaded from the myCAR website.

The fines exacted for late payment are as follows:
– Zero if the road tax is less than €30.00
– For two-and three-wheelers and private passenger vehicles, an amount equivalent to the road tax due.
– For public service vehicles, 50 per cent of the tax due.

If the motorist has already obtained a notification of the road tax but has failed to pay it on time, they should revisit the myCAR website and get a new notification, which will then show the correct amount to be paid.

Cars exempt from road tax
Road tax is calculated on the basis of engine capacity for older cars, and CO2 emissions for newer ones. On the latter basis, there are exemptions for cars whose CO2 emissions are below a certain level. Purely electric cars pay no road tax, while for others the following rules currently apply:
– Conventional vehicles registered before 1st November 2010 continue to pay road tax based on their cubic capacity.
– Hybrid vehicles registered up to 30th October 2010 are exempt from road tax if their engine capacity is no more than 1,549 cc.
– For vehicles registered between 1st November 2010 and 31st December 2020 (both conventional and hybrid), the road tax is zero if their CO2 emissions are no more than 90 gm/cu m.
– Vehicles registered from 1st January 2021 to the present (conventional and hybrid) are considered new and are exempt from road tax if their emissions are no more than 122 gr/cu m.

Digital immobilisation
The myCAR website also has the facility to digitally immobilise the car if the owner does not want to pay the road tax (the digital equivalent of the former practice of handing in the number plates). It is also possible to immobilise the car for part of the year and pay the road tax only for the months when it is expected to be on the road. It is emphasised that there are heavy penalties for misuse of this facility. For example, if a car is spotted on the road or at a location which is not the one registered at the time of immobilisation the owner will be fined €10,000, or €30,000 with removal of driving licence for a repeat offence.
