The exhibition of marine paintings by Konstantinos Volanakis at Chania’s Municipal Art Gallery is to be extended for another month. Entitled “Nostos of the Sea, works from the collection of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation”, the exhibition, which was due to close on 31st December, is now open until 31st January 2024.

On show are 57 works by the artist considered Greece’s greatest painter of marine subjects, including ships at anchor and under full sail, fishermen hauling in their nets, historic naval battles, and everyday scenes on shore. Their vivid realism is imbued with a sense of the artist’s great love for the element which preoccupied him for his entire professional life. A handsome catalogue, priced at €20.00, contains illustrations of all the paintings on show.

The gallery, which is at the top of Halidon street in Chania, is open as follows:
Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00-14:00 and 18:00-21:00
