New recycling bins in Chania

The recycling network of the Municipality of Chania is being expanded with the installation of new bins at different points in the city. Bins with three different-coloured lids are being deployed:
– yellow for mixed paper and cardboard,
– white for tetrapak cartons only,
– blue for plastic and metal.

In the past few days, 20 new sets of the bins have been placed at central points in the city including the following:
– at the top of Halidon street,
– in Sourmelis street (behind the Küçük Hasan Mosque on the waterfront),
– at the Sand Gate car park,
– in Splantzia Square,
– at the corner of Kallergon and Dionisiou streets behind the old harbour,
– in Tsouderon street (Markopoulou Square),
– at the corner of Mousouron and Tsouderon behind the Agora,
– at the corner of Karaoli ke Dimitriou and Episkopou Dorotheou.

The new bins will appreciably extend the Municipality’s recycling network, 18 sets of bins having already been placed at the Chania Town Hall and at municipal services, municipal sports grounds, children’s playgrounds, day nurseries and municipal spaces for public gatherings.

The Municipality’s Directorate of Environment, Green Issues and Hygiene has also scheduled the installation in the near future of a further 10 sets of recycling bins at the following points:
– at the corner of Douka and Akti Koundourioti on the Venetian harbour,
– in Talos Square,
– at the Parkaki (playground) at Nea Hora,
– at Amperia Park,
– at the Park of Peace and Friendship,
– at the Park of Agioi Apostoli,
– at the Dikastiria,
– in Andreas Papandreou Street, at the Agora and at 1866 Square.

According to the Deputy Mayor for Hygiene and the Environment Michalis Tsoupakis, “our basic aim is to create a dense recycling network within the city, so that all citizens can recycle items of everyday use which would otherwise end up in a general rubbish bin. By placing their rubbish in the right bin, citizens become active participants in the separate collection of recyclable packaging, essentially helping the recycling process.”
