Major renovation works are under way at the Kissamos Health Centre, with money provided by the EU’s Recovery Fund. The Health Centre, which was built in the 80s and has not had any major upgrade since then, is receiving around €2.0 million for the operation, out of a total package of €4,924,539 which is earmarked for the Health Centres at Kissamos, Chania, Sfakia, Vamos, and Agia Foteini in the municipality of Amari, Rethymnon.

According to details provided by the technical services of the 7th Health Region of Crete, the improvements to the building include:
– thermal insulation, energy upgrading and new floors;
– renewal of the the water supply and drainage systems;
– updating of the heating system;
– rearrangement of waiting rooms and surgeries etc.
The work is being done step by step so as not to affect the operation of the Health Centre. The renovations are currently being concentrated on the 1st floor and the outside, while healthcare services continue to be provided on the ground floor.

Delayed works
The deadline for the work was originally set at August of this year, but the contractor has been allowed an extension because of delays caused by the need obtain permits from the Ephorate of Antiquities, as the Health Centre is in an archaeological zone.

According to the 7th Health Region of Crete there have been minor works and renovations in the past, but this is the first time that the building has had such an in-depth renovation to bring it in line with modern needs. The whole project is being carried out within the framework of the National Recovery Plan “Greece 2.0” with co-funding from the EU’s NextGeneration EU programme, and is subject to the special terms of implementation for projects funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund.

However, apart from building issues the biggest problem faced by the Kissamos Health Centre is the major lack of personnel, which has been accentuated in the past few years.
