As is usual in hot summers, by the end of July stocks of agricultural water are running low and rationing is being introduced for irrigation. The following notice has appeared in today’s Haniotika Nea:

ANNOUNCEMENT OF IRRIGATION WATER SCHEDULE
The T.O.E.V. [Land Improvement Organisation] for Agia-Kolymbari, because of the reduced availability of water and increased demand,
announces
to farmers who wish to irrigate in the high areas from Kontomari to Spilia that they should try from every Sunday evening to 10:00 am on Tuesday. Also from every Wednesday evening to 10:00 am on Friday.
Consumers in the whole of the low area (coastal zone) will be able to irrigate from 10:00 am every Tuesday to 7:00 pm on Wednesday. Also from 10:00 am every Friday to 7:00 pm on Sunday.
As in previous years, the setting of a schedule does not mean that there will actually be water available during those times (the phrasing “they can try” does not show much optimism). If there is water it will no doubt be a case of “first come first served”. Nor is it clear what category the villages of the Rodopou Peninsula come under. While they obviously qualify as “high areas” they are also closer to the coastal zone, and there was certainly no water in Afrata village today (Wednesday) around 8:00 am. We will investigate further and issue an update to this post if appropriate. Otherwise the usual rule of “try it and see” will apply.
