Motorists are reminded that 31st December is the final date for paying the road tax on their vehicles. This year there will be no reprieve as there has been in some previous years, extending the deadline by a few days to catch the laggards.

According to the AADE, fines will be imposed an all those who fail to pay the tax by the due date, with the amount increasing according to the degree of lateness in payment. Specifically:
— for payment within the month of January 2026, an extra 25% of the amount of tax will be levied.
— for payment within the month of February the fine is 50% of the tax due.
— for payment from 1st March onwards, an extra 100% is levied.
The minimum fine is €30, regardless of the amount of road tax due.
Electronic immobilisation
People who have had cause to visit a police station in the past have returned with tales of whole rooms stacked high with number plates from motorists who have voluntarily immobilised their vehicles or had them immobilised for a traffic offence. This phenomenon should be a thing of the past, at least for those who wish to immobilise their vehicles voluntarily, as this can now be done online through the myCar app on the AADE website. (https://www.aade.gr/en/mycar)
Motorists will need to enter:
— the car’s registration number;
— the owner’s address;
— the place of parking, whether owned, rented or lent.
In the case of multiple ownership of a vehicle, the other owners are automatically informed of the application and have to approve it in order for the process to to completed.
As from April 2026, it will be possible to pay road tax by the month, for those who wish to immobilise their vehicle temporarily.
