The Kipos Cinema opens for summer 2026

The Kipos Municipal Cinema, the city’s historic summer cinema, is this year once more opening its doors to the public, inviting young and old to a summer filled with cinematic experiences, in the leafy setting of the Municipal Garden of Chania. The showings start on Monday 25th May 2026, with a week of free showings up to Sunday 31st May.

Until 30th March the programme consists of works by directors from Chania, showing off the vitality of local cinematic production and giving a voice to creators from our area. The opening week concludes on Sunday 31st May with a special showing in collaboration with the National Opera, offering the public a unique cultural experience.

The Kipos Municipal Cinema will operate until 20th September 2026, with daily showings and a rich programme which includes films for all ages and all cinematic interests. Specifically:
— Every Monday and Tuesday children’s films will be shown.
— Every Wednesday and Thursday the programme will be devoted to cinephile showings, with selected films from Greece and abroad.

Tickets are sold only via card or online payments, either at the cinema box office or through the Chania Culture website. From Monday the detailed programme of showings will be available in printed form at the Megalo Arsenali and the City Hall.

All showings are at 9.30 pm up to 26th July, and thereafter at 9.00 pm.

The films for May 2026 are as follows:

   “Tanais – Embraced by the Abyss” tells the story of the Jewish, Orthodox and Catholic prisoners of war who lost their lives on 9th June 1944, when the ship requisitioned by the Germans to deport them to Germany was sunk by a torpedo from a British submarine.
