Traffic restrictions are in force due to roadworks on two sections of the VOAK in the Chania area. Long-term restrictions are in place on the sections between the Mournies and Vamvakopoulo interchanges from 12th July to 12th October, while there are continuing works on the Kissamos-Kolymbari section east of Nopigia.
Mournies-Vamvakopoulo until 12th October
From 12th July to 12th October there will be narrowed traffic lanes on the section from km 0.5 at Mournies to km 1.8 at Vamvakopoulo (distances from Chania). At the Vamvakopoulo interchange, and solely for vehicles travelling from Kissamos towards Chania:
— the exit from the VOAK to the Leoforo Kazantzaki will be closed;
— the entrance to the VOAK from the Leoforo Kazantzaki will be closed.
The works are part of the construction of new city bypasses for Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion, which represent a preliminary stage in the construction of the main section of the new VOAK from Chania to Heraklion.
Further night-time works on the Kissamos-Kolymbari section
As part of the ongoing implementation of road safety measures on the existing VOAK, traffic restrictions are currently in force on the Kissamos-Kolymbari section of the highway as follows:
Up to 29th July, from km 28.5 to km 27.5 before Melissourgeio (distances from Chania) there will be alternating streams with traffic lights, during night-time hours only, from 10.00 pm to 6.00 am.
Drivers are urged to follow the signs and the instructions of the Traffic Police.
Extension of road works towards Kolymbari
The same system will be in operation from 27th July to 2nd August between km 27.5 and km 26.2, i.e. up to the Kalydonia interchange, as the focus of works moves towards Kolymbari. As before there will be alternating streams controlled by traffic lights to allow roadworks to take place from 10.00 pm to 6 am.
The announcement by the Chania Directorate of Police stresses that the object of the measures is to avoid accidents, and to protect both workers and road users.
