Ferry passenger’s death causes national outrage

A Cretan ferry passenger was drowned on Tuesday evening while trying to board a Blue Star ferry as it was leaving the port of Piraeus for Heraklion. Thirty-six-year-old Antonis Kargiotis from Agios Nikolaos was trying to board the ferry Blue Horizon when he was pushed from the ship’s ramp and fell into the sea, where he drowned. A mobile phone video of the event, published by the newspaper Proto Thema, was uploaded to social media and rapidly went viral, provoking widespread condemnation from the public and the authorities.
