Chania’s Agora to open at Easter 2026

On Monday 10th November, the clock on the south façade of the Municipal Agora in Chania was reinstalled, and restarted. Following a precarious ride up on a crane lift, the Mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis stepped onto the scaffolding and attached the hands to the clock at 12.55 – the time at which it had stopped when taken down for the renovations four and half years previously. A roof over their heads?

When Chania’s municipal market – the Agora in the city centre – closed in November 2021, it was the end of an era, both for the shopowners and for the citizens of Chania for whom it had been focal point since its opening in 1913. The planned renovation was long overdue and the Municipality saw it as a chance not only to restore and modernise the city’s major landmark but to redress the imbalance in its retail profile.

Satisfactory progress on the Agora

Visiting the site of the renovations to the Municipal Market in Chania – the Agora – on 30th April, the city’s mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis pronounced himself satisfied with the progress being made. The mayor was accompanied by deputy mayors Michail Kalogridakis (Technical Services), Emmanouil Kotsifakis (Technical Services), Stylianos Michailakis (Civil Protection, Education, Sport and Culture) and Michail Tsoupakis (Environment, Green Issues and Hygiene), as well as Municipal Councillor Adam Moutzoukas, staff of the Municipality’s Technical Services Directorate and representatives of the contractor.
