On 11^th January this year a fatal accident cost the life of 22-year-old Panagiotis Karatzis, who was killed when a Porsche driven by a drunken driver collided with his car on the Leoforo Karamanlis in Souda. It transpired that the 45-year-old driver of the Porsche, described as a well-known local businessman, had been stopped by a police patrol some hours earlier and found to be nearly three times over the legal limit for alcohol, but instead of being arrested on the spot as the law required, had been allowed to go on his way, driven by his female companion who was sober. A few hours later he was on the road again, under the influence of alcohol and what were described as “anti-psychotic drugs”, when the accident happened.
