The year 2025 was a difficult one for the Fire Service in Crete, with outbreaks of fire exacerbated by high summer temperatures and gale force winds in many places. The worst outbreak was near Ierapetra in July, when a major conflagration was fought by more than 230 firefighters along with 46 vehicles and 10 helicopters, and 1,500 residents and visitors had to be evacuated from four villages.

New Service chiefs pay courtesy visits in Chania
The mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis received a visit from the new Director of the Chania Traffic Police, Superintendent Efstratia Koulara, on Thursday 6th March. Also present at the meeting were the deputy mayors Nikos Hazirakis, responsible for traffic issues in the Municipality; Michalis Tsoupakis for the Environment, Hygiene and Green matters; Michalis Kalogridakis for Technical Services; and Giannis Nikiforakis for Local Economy and Development.

Because of the ongoing risk of fire, the no-fires season in Greece – which normally ends on 31st October – is being extended for another two weeks to 15th November in many parts of the country, including Crete. In a press release published on 31st October, the Fire Service states:

The no-fires season, during which the use of fire is banned in the countryside and in all open spaces, officially started yesterday, 15th April, throughout the island of Crete. The Fire Service will be increasing its patrols and offenders will be punished with steep fines and arrest.
