The archaeological site of Knossos is to be provided with a fire protection network and a lightning prevention system, as part of an overall upgrade programme by the ministry of Culture which will include the protection and promotion of the Minoan palace and the improvement of visitor access routes. According to a ministry press release, the works, with a total budget of €3.5 million, are being funded through the ESPA Regional Operational Programme “Crete 2021-2027”.

Archaeological discovery at the new Heraklion Airport
The discovery of an unusual archaeological site on a hilltop close to the new airport being constructed at Kastelli, in the Regional Unit of Heraklion, has attracted media attention around the world, with press reports describing it as “threatening to disrupt” the airport’s construction. The find was announced following a visit to Crete by the minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, during which she visited the site and also took part in a seminar at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion on combating the effects of climate change on cultural heritage.

The bare shell of the Agora in Chania is by now such a familiar sight that it is not surprising that locals have become pessimistic about the prospects of it ever being finished, and see it joining the collection of half-ruined buildings which litter the city. Of the work which is visible, the whole of the roof structure has been removed and taken away for reconstruction, all the interior partitions and fittings have been stripped out leaving the bare walls, and substantial excavations have taken place on the floor area between the walls, now filled in leaving piles of earth. Additionally, the shell has been stabilised with the insertion of iron girders along the top of the apertures in the exterior walls, presumably to bring the building up to modern standards of earthquake resistance.
