Current data for the year 2025 show an encouraging decrease in fatal road accidents in Crete, it was stated at a road safety event held on Tuesday 14th October at the Mikis Theodorakis Theatre in Chania, as part of a series organised by the EKO group of petrol stations.

Multiple traffic offences recorded in Crete
In our previous post on the subject of road safety, and the fatal accident in Chania on 11th January, we commented that driver behaviour is a strong contributing factor to the high incidence of fatalities in road accidents in Crete, “with speeding and reckless overtaking featuring high on the list, especially on the VOAK, and driving under the influence of alcohol also being commonplace. The failure to wear seatbelts is undoubtedly another factor.”

Late last month a major road accident with fatalities took place at the Galatas interchange of the VOAK just outside Chania, plunging local communities into mourning and once again raising questions about the safety of the island’s northern highway and the scourge of traffic accidents, which are higher in Crete than anywhere else in the country.
