Changes in traffic arrangements at Mournies

New routing arrangements for traffic using the Mournies junction have been announced by the Crete Development Organisation. They will be in force between 4th December and 15th December 2023. The changes, which are to allow further construction work on the new road, are as follows:

Map of Mournies Road/Agia Marina street junction

Vehicles travelling eastward on Agia Marina street will no longer be able to go straight ahead at the junction with the Mournies Road, but will have to turn right and travel south towards the VOAK interchange.
Drivers travelling south on Sophocli Venizelou street, on arriving at the junction with Agia Marina, will be warned that entry into the Agia Maria/Mournies Road junction is closed and that there is no exit from Agia Marina towards the west.

Traffic moving north on the Mournies Road from the VOAK exit towards the centre of Chania will not be able to go straight ahead and then turn west onto Agia Marina, but must take the parallel road in front of the Shell petrol station and turn east on Agia Marina, joining up with Sophocli Venizelou to head into the city centre. About 500m before the Agia Marina junction, there will be warning signs showing the change of route.

Vehicles heading south on the Mournies Road, on arriving at the junction with Agia Marina can either continue straight on towards the VOAK or turn right onto Agia Marina and head back towards the city centre via Nikola Plastira. They will be unable to turn left and head east because of road works.
As is the case now, access to the Mournies Road from the centre of Chania towards the VOAK is only via Zymvrakakidon street, which is one-way from north to south.

These arrangements will be in force until 15th December. Citizens are requested to observe them so that vehicular and pedestrian traffic, as well as the road works, can proceed unhindered.
(Haniotika Nea 02/12/23)

An editorial comment in today’s Haniotika Nea notes that the original plan for the new junction was drawn up in 2005-07, but there were a series of delays in implementing it including the fact that it did not originally include a multitude of infrastructure works, such as the construction of culverts, moving of cables and water supply and sewerage pipes, etc. However, the current changes in traffic arrangements should be the last before the junction is completed. Barring further unforeseen delays, the work should now be finished by the end of 2023 or early in the new year.
