The new, stricter Highway Code recently issued is part of a government effort to reduce road accidents by penalising driving offenders. In this context it is a reasonable assumption that motorists who drive without a valid licence, or without paying for insurance or road tax, are likely to be as negligent in their driving behaviour as they are in administrative matters.

Road tax details for 2025 announced
Details of the vehicle road tax rates payable for 2025 have now been posted on the AADE website. The road tax must be paid by 31st December of this year. Vehicle owners can download a form which states the amount due and gives a payment code for payment at a bank or post office, by going to the AADE website at https://www.aade.gr/teli-kykloforias-horis-kodikoys-taxisnet

A new bill which is shortly to be put up for public discussion will allow the ministry of Economy and Finance to implement both stricter checks and bigger penalties for cars which are uninsured or have not been tested at a Vehicle Inspection Centre (KTEO), or for which the road tax has not been paid on time. It is estimated that there are around 500,000 uninsured vehicles on Greece’s roads, and the bill will allow for more frequent checks to be made and to identify them through cross-checking data from different government sources.
