New funding for Cretan research centres

Approval for the funding of six research infrastructure projects at the higher educational and research establishments of Crete was signed by the Regional Governor Stavros Arnautakis on Tuesday 4th March. With a total budget of €12.2 million from the Regional Programme for Crete for 2012-27, the projects promote innovation, collaboration between the educational and research establishments and the use of research equipment by teaching staff and researchers across Crete, with the aim of providing technological support to the institutions and also the island’s businesses.

New aquatic animal welfare centre to be established in Crete

Significant benefits for Crete are expected to accrue from the creation of a European Reference Centre for the Welfare of Aquatic Animals in Heraklion. The creation of the centre, which is expected to start operation in January 2024, was announced recently in Luxembourg at a meeting between the minister for Rural Development and Food, Lefteris Avgenakis, and the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides.

A study of medicinal springs in Crete

A significant number of springs in Crete fulfil the prevailing criteria to be recognised as medicinal, according to a study by the Technical University of Crete which was presented to the Deputy Regional Governor for Chania Nikos Kalogeris on Friday 4th August. Presenting the study was Professor Manolis Manoutsoglou, Dean of the University’s School of Mineral Resources Engineering, as noted in a press release put out by the Regional Unit of Chania.
