With the approach of the new tourist season, there is some anxiety in the Municipality of Platanias about the possibility of meeting the increased water demand which will be generated by many thousands of visitors. The local water company DEYAVA (the name means Public Enterprise for Water Supply and Sewerage of the Northern Axis) has had partial success in finding new supplies, with two out of four new boreholes producing results. However, as a report in Haniotika Nea makes clear, this is far from fulfilling the predicted demand for the summer.

An end to smells in Gerani
Work is under way to extend the Northern Axis sewage works at Gerani, which is overloaded every summer from the large numbers of visitors occupying holiday accommodation in the area. At the same time a pipeline is to be constructed which will transfer treated water from the treatment plant to be used for irrigating tree crops such as olives and citrus. The Northern Axis Water Board, DEYAVA, is now under pressure to complete the work, which has been delayed for many years, before the end of summer 2024.

The contract for creating a new reservoir at Plakalona, 10 km south west of Kolymbari, and the accompanying supply network was signed on 23rd January between the contractor and the Northern Axis Water Board (DEYAVA). The reservoir of 1,000 cu m, together with a 400 m connecting main, has a budget of €482,713, to be funded by the Public Expenditure Programme. The deadline for completion is 18 months, although it is expected that the project will be completed earlier.

On Monday 13th November, a contract was signed at the offices of DEYAVA in Gerani for the installation of digital water meters throughout the organisation’s distribution network. With a budget of €4.7 million, the work is being jointly funded by the Public Investment Programme and the EU’s Cohesion Fund. The timescale for the programme is 5 months for delivery and 2 months for trial operation.
