The decision to exercise the option for the Chania-Kissamos extension of the VOAK was signed on 15th December by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas, in the presence of the Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos and the General Secretary for Infrastructure Dimitris Anagnopoulos. A major turnout of local government figures and MPs signalled not only its importance for the local community but also, as explained by the ministers, its critical importance in the execution of the project as a whole. It was also a reassuring move for the residents of West Crete, who when the extension was first announced as an optional addition to the main contract, feared that the prospects for its completion might fade into the distance.

A choir workshop at Kissamos
This week marks the revival of Andrea Fessmann’s Choir Workshop, which is being held for the second year running at the Viglia Beach Apartments just west of Kissamos. Participants are getting a week’s voice training and rehearsal of some well-known works by Mendelssohn and John Rutter, at the end of which they will perform them at a concert at the Stone Theatre in Nopigia.

With the current fashion for “destination weddings” among foreign visitors, it is inevitable that some of the most scenic sites in the Nomos of Chania have proved popular for such ceremonies. The list of approved sites in the Municipality of Kissamos, which already included favourites such as Balos and Falassarna, has now been extended to include the archaeological site of Rokka, where there is an annual concert at the time of the “supermoon” in August. A plan for renovation of the historic centre of Kissamos, which includes more green space and the designation of cultural, religious and “green” walks, was presented at Kissamos town hall on Friday 12th January. The plan, based on local research and consultation, has been passed by the Central Archaeological Council and the first part relating to Skalidi Street, with a budget of €1.4 million, is expected to be put out for tender within the next three months. A second part, for the remodelling of Tzanakaki Square (adjoining the Archaeological Museum), is to be submitted to the Regional Authority of Crete for funding.

Replacement of asbestos pipes in Kissamos
The work of replacing asbestos pipes in the water supply network of Kissamos and adjacent areas is to start again shortly. Two kilometres of piping have already been replaced and another 5 km are still to be changed, chiefly on Iroon Polytechniou and in the neighbourhood of Kamara.
Charity swim from Antikythira to Kissamos
Two weeks ago, on Thursday 14th September, two Kissamos athletes set out from the island of Antikythira to swim the 55 km south to Kissamos, in support of a local school for special needs. Shortly after 4.00 pm on the Friday afternoon, Kostas Varouchakis and Nikos Paterakis arrived at the rocky Customs Beach in Kissamos, to be greeted with cheers, applause and fireworks from an assembly of family members and friends.
