The Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has this week been sending a strong message on the clearance of building plots, the deadline for which has been extended to 22nd June, with no further extensions envisaged. The Minister, Evangelos Tournas, has been sounding the alarm over uncleared plots which are sources of inflammable materials and can contribute to the spread of fires.

Land clearance rules for summer 2026
Press releases issued by the Municipalities of Chania and Platanias have announced the rules relating to the obligatory clearance of vegetation from building plots and other parcels of land in urban areas, ahead of the no-fires period which will extend from 1st May to 31st October (unless otherwise modified in the light of prevailing weather conditions). Further to our two recent posts on the subject of the obligation of property owners to clear their land of extraneous vegetation before the start of the no-fires season, the government has now announced an extension of the deadline from 30th April to 15th June. This is welcome news since, apart from taking the pressure off property owners, it also is a reprieve for the many wildflowers which currently decorate the countryside and which are no doubt a haven for all kinds of wildlife and therefore contribute to the much prized biodiversity.

Having approached the KEP in Platanias for advice on the problem of making a declaration of land clearance in the absence of a Land Registry code (KAEK) for the property, we were told that we could do so using the “x” and “y” coordinates from the topografiko of the property. This produced a partial solution, the steps of which are explained as follows.

With the ever-increasing danger of damage to property and lives from forest fires during the summer period the government has taken a number of measures to ensure that citizens do their part in implementing fire-protection measures on their land. A measure introduced last year is the establishment in law of the obligation to clear property of flammable materials in anticipation of the no-fires period which runs from 1st May to 31st October each year, and to make a declaration confirming that action has been taken to the authorities.
