Regular readers may remember that nearly a year ago we reported on the death of Haris, the sea turtle who was a regular visitor to the Old Harbour in Chania during the summer months, and was fed fish scraps by the Kopasis brothers, who run the Vasiliko fish restaurant on the Akti Enoseos and have their own fishing boat. Feeding Haris was a daily ritual attended by tourists and he was much mourned by the fishermen, who regarded him as their friend.

Red Arrows to perform at Battle of Crete memorial

The RAF’s aerobatic team, the Red Arrows, will be participating in the events commemorating the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Crete from 20th to 26th May. They will be flying over the Venetian Harbour in Chania where they last performed in 2011, having also given a display at Maleme in 2021. The provisional programme of events, which has still to be confirmed, is as follows:
Fishing tourism – an alternative solution
The Region of Crete is looking to fishing tourism as a solution which will give more income to local fishermen, while at the same time reducing fishing as an activity. In fishing tourism, the amount of fish caught is much less than in professional fishing, and the riches of the sea can thus be preserved.
