The Municipal Port Authority of Chania have specified the number of sites available for open-air trading in 2026. According to a recent announcement, the concession lasts until 31st December 2026 and payment of the annual fee is due in its entirety within 5 days of the issue of each permit by the Authority’s Management Board.

Club Med in Chania

Standing waiting for a taxi in the centre of Chania yesterday (19th August) we were pinned to the wall by a long file of tourists led by a lady holding aloft a paddle with a number on it, clearly identifying them as passengers on a cruise ship. The party stopped, filling the pavement by the taxi rank, their guide having apparently found something of consuming interest in the courtyard of what was formerly the 1st Gymnasium of Chania, but is now the Chania Scholeio Defteris Efkairias or Second Chance School, established to give those over the age of 18 the chance to acquire the high-school diploma which they had previously missed. Perhaps the guide considered this educational experiment interesting enough in itself, although the courtyard also contains one of Chania’s many war memorials.

New Harbour Board building inaugurated in Chania

On Wednesday 19th February an inauguration ceremony was held for the new building of the Municipal Harbour Board of Chania at Akti Tompazi 26 and Afendoulief streets in the Venetian Harbour. The inauguration was attended by the mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis, the President of the Municipal Harbour Board Manolis Kotsifakis, deputy mayors, Harbour Board directors and local authority representatives.

Cinema Under the Stars – the Chania Film Festival

For the 10 days from 29th July to 6th August, the Chania Film Festival will be offering a selection of old and newer films in opening air viewings under the title Cinema Under the Stars, at the Kipos Cinema and elsewhere in the city. For the first time this year the programme will include a midnight showing at the Kipos Cinema, and there will also be showings at the amphitheatre of the Hellenic Mediterranean University in Halepa, in the heart of the Venetian Harbour, and at the Swimming Pool in Nea Hora.
