“Let’s listen, eat and drink Cretan”

As data from both road accidents and police checks on motorists show, the excess consumption of alcohol among drivers remains a problem in Crete, and in the nation as a whole. A number of recent incidents reported both locally and elsewhere tell of inebriated drivers losing control of their vehicles and colliding with parked cars – usually and fortunately causing no more than material damage. A brief Google search on such incidents in Greece produced no less than six since the beginning of the year: three in Crete and three on the mainland.

Cretan wines are gaining ground internationally

Cretan wines are gaining ground in the international markets, it was stated at the OiNotika 24 wine fair held on the weekend of 24-25th February. In the last few years Cretan wineries have seen continuous growth, with the USA and the UK seen as major targets for export. More than 35 wineries with over 400 labels took part in the fair at the Avra Imperial Hotel in Kolymbari, offering visitors a panoramic sampling of wines from all across the island.

OiNotika wine fair returns to Kolymbari

OiNotika 24, the 16th in the series of wine fairs organised by Wines of Crete, will be held this coming weekend at the Avra Imperial Hotel in Kolymbari. Visitors will be able to sample both new and old vintages from 35 Cretan wineries, to talk to the winemakers and to find out about the other promotional activities of Wines of Crete. There will also be a sales counter where Cretan wines can be bought at a nominal price, with part of the proceeds going to the Orizontas volunteer association.

Chania Wine Festival at the KAM


For the second consecutive year, the Chania Wine Festival, organised by Giorgos Liodakis and Katerina Marmaritsaki of the EnoTrapeza wine shop in Tsikalaria, is being held at the KAM on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th February. The participants include 39 wineries from Crete, Santorini, Kefalonia, Cyprus and mainland Greece, one Cretan distillery and four wine importers.

Wines of Crete comes to Kolymbari

One of the most agreeable, and less strenuous ways of spending a summer afternoon in Crete is in visiting one of the island’s numerous wineries. With the growth of wine tourism in recent years many of them provide facilities for visitors, including tours of the premises and tastings of the wines produced. For a small fee, visitors can taste half a dozen wines, accompanied by snacks, and receive a short presentation from an oenologist or a staff member with a good knowledge of the winery’s products. The wines can be bought on the spot, and many are also obtainable from local supermarkets.
